The Story of the Staircase
April 1, 2026
Bringing the vision to life.
Most homes have a focal point—a fireplace, a wall of windows, or an expansive kitchen. In our latest project, the Savannah, that centerpiece is undeniably the staircase.
With its sweeping, curved design, it sets the tone the moment you step through the front door. This new feature was an exciting challenge for our team, and it has quickly become the most talked-about feature in the home.
Behind the curve.
Before the finishes and framing, there was a fundamental question: How do we make a grand curve fit a functional floor plan?
From a drafting perspective, this required a complete rethink of the layout. Brian Engebretsen, Senior Architectural Drafter, explains:
“The design started with the math. There are specific minimum dimensions for wedge-shaped treads, which dictated the width of the U-turn. It ended up significantly larger than a standard staircase.”
Solving for the stairs meant making strategic adjustments elsewhere. To preserve the footprint of the Gathering Room, Brian pushed the garage forward 18 inches. This created a ripple effect, moving the Bonus Room and requiring a full redesign of the Bedroom #4 en-suite.
“To keep the staircase symmetrical, we added a 20th riser,” says Brian. “It’s one more than technically required, but it gives the stairs a much gentler, more comfortable rise.”
From the calculated rise of the treads to the defining lines of the final layout, see the vision come together as Brian and Project Manager Ryan Schwechler discuss the home’s standout features!
A sculptural centerpiece.
Design is the blueprint; execution is the craft. A curved staircase requires precision that exceeds standard construction. Every phase, from the initial framing to the final trim, must be perfectly aligned to ensure the curve feels fluid.
Michelle, our Senior Interior Designer, envisioned the stairs as a sculptural element.
“We wanted the staircase to feel like a natural extension of the architecture,” Michelle explains. “We collaborated closely with our partners to develop a custom stain that seamlessly matches the treads to the hardwood flooring. The look is finished with a custom-fabricated metal handrail, adding a modern, refined touch.”
The first impression.
The true test of any design is how it feels in person. Allison Hein, New Home Consultant, has seen the reaction firsthand during the Parade of Homes.
“The feedback has been incredible,” Allison shares. “Visitors love how the curve of the stairs complements the arched transitions throughout the home. It’s been called the ‘best house on the tour’ by several guests, which is a testament to the team’s hard work.”
More than just a staircase.
This project represents the heart of what we do: collaborative problem-solving. It’s a reflection of what is possible in a semi-custom home when vision and craftsmanship align.
